What this section covers
The H endorsement is a separate knowledge test — typically 30 questions, 80% — plus a TSA security threat assessment before the endorsement is printed.
You need it to haul placarded hazardous materials. Tank + hazmat together is often sold as X (tanker + H).
Expect:
- Nine DOT hazard classes
- Shipping papers within reach (pouch or driver's door)
- Placards on all four sides
- No flares with flammables / explosives — use triangles
- Route restrictions and never driving a leaking load
